Chung Hwa Pulp has concreted its footing in green sustainability. This year, the company participated in the Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) for the first time held by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy. CHP achieved to win the TOP 50 Corporate Sustainability Awards in the Traditional Manufacturing Group, as well as the Bronze Award for Excellent CSR Reports in the same group. It was a bespoke win which shows CHP’s business philosophy of being responsible for environmental sustainability.
Mr. Kirk Hwang, Chairman of Chung Hwa Pulp, indicated that, since pulping production and the paper industry are both highly compatible with the nature, the industrial materials can be re-used by endless circulations. In the face of arising concerns about environmental conservation and sustainable development in the international world, CHP feels more obliged to take proactive action in response to different environmental requirements. CHP wants to build new business edges based on green thinking.
2017 is a year full of harvest for CHP. Having acquired the Taipei City Government Green Procurement Award in early November, recently the company was crowned as a business that excels in greenhouse gas reduction by the Industrial Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. With the additional Corporate Sustainability Award, CHP has been able to exhibit the result of its long-term production/marketing strategy made in promoting environmental protection and energy saving.
With energy saving and environmental protection continuously being promoted in the production process, the impact has been seen in CHP’s operational performance. Revenue and profit figures for the first three quarters this year have both been remarkable. Revenue in the first three quarters is increased by 2.2% compared with prior year to reach NT$16.55 billion, and net income after tax achieves to be NT$ 469 million, up 98.3%. This lead to earnings per share is NT$0.43, a double of last year’s figure.
CHP’s energy saving and low-carbon production have also impacted positively on the company’s operational efficiency. Currently, in addition to purchasing raw materials of pulp and wood chips certified by FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), recently in transforming the company’s production process, CHP insists on making the most use of recourses to avoid wastes and tries its best to converse residual materials into resources. By circulating the use of resources, CHP hopes to achieve the green goal of “zero residual diffusion”, and make itself progresses into a value-added business even more contributory to society.
The black liquor recycled in the pulping process, as well as residual materials produced from production, such as pulp, paper sludge, and plastic mixtures, etc., can all be shifted and used in the steam and electricity symbiosis system as a source of heat, thereby can reduce the need for burning fossil fuels such as coal and heavy oil year by year, reducing the impact on the environment.
At present, the by-product of electrolyzed salt generated in producing the chemical used in pulping is recycled by CHP’s Hualien Mill for the hydrogen energy transformed through the technology of purification. The technology has made CHP appointed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs to assist in manufacturing hydrogen batteries as well as constructing the Demonstration Base of Hydrogen Energy. Currently the by-product collected in the mill is sent further to lime kilns for CO2-free combustion in order to partially replace the use of heavy oil.
In the 2016 CSR Corporate Social Responsibility Report, which won an award for CHP this year, the company emphasized on the construction of a sustainable recycling management system. Taking the “3R (Recycle/Reclaim/Regenerate)” concept as a core strategy, CHP will strive to create a production system which can successfully integrate the resource of forest, pulp and paper. The concept of sustainable operation will be at the same time internalized within the company with profitability and business growth of different stages being the prerequisite goal.
