The result of the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards (AREA), known as "The Nobel Prize of Sustainability", was released on June 24, 2016, in Sentosa, Singapore. The hydrogen energy project proposed by Chung Hwa Pulp’s Hualien Mill won the Green Leadership Award by excelling from the more than 300 participants of 28 countries in the election. This special honor is just an unquestionable recognition of CHP’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability!
Founded in 2006 by the Non-Governmental Organization of Enterprise Asia, the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards comprise six categories: Green Leadership Award, Human Investment Award, Health and Wellness Promotion Award, Social Welfare Development Award, Small and Medium Enterprise Social Responsibility Award, and Responsible Business Leadership Award. Every year, the organization elects Asian enterprises with outstanding performance in each category to receive the awards. Proposed by CHP, this award-winning hydrogen energy project is a truly pioneering innovation in the national-wide manufacturing industry. In this project, a by-product produced in the process of manufacturing chemicals used for puling, called electrolyzed salt, is recycled by CHP’s factory, and by using the technology of purification, is eventually transformed to become hydrogen power. The idea is completely in line with the spirit required for the wining of the "Green Leadership Award” - to take minimizing environmental impact as an inexorable corporate responsibility.
To YFY Inc., the implementation of the hydrogen energy project not only makes the company a leader in the green energy fashion, but is also a true reflection of YFY’s philosophy - everything is indispensable. Hydrogen used in this project is collected in the process of manufacturing the chemical used in pulping. Usually, the by-product of electrolyzed salt is not recycled. However, after recycling and purification, the product turns out to be a source with economic value which can be used to generate green energy. This is a big step CHP made towards fulfilling the corporate vision of zero-carbon emission.
The Hydrogen Energy Project can be classified into two parts: “The Demonstration Base of Hydrogen Energy”, and “The Replacement of Heavy Oil with Hydrogen Fuel”. Regarding the Demonstration Base of Hydrogen Energy, CHP was appointed by the Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs to work in cooperation with Asia Pacific Fuel Cell Technologies to manufacture hydrogen batteries and develop applications related to this. The two companies also agreed to jointly establish a demonstration base for hydrogen energy. On the other hand, a hydrogen recycling system design has been set up in the Hualien Mill to recycle hydrogen and send the collection further to lime kilns for combustion. The solution has functioned well as a replacement of heavy oil used for generating steam. The hydrogen recycling system was launched in April 2015. As of December 2015, it has saved about 436,300 liters of heavy oil and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by up to 1,287 metric tons.
The hydrogen purification technologies have profoundly enabled energy regeneration and industrial revolution in CHP. More importantly, CHP wishes that this project can demonstrate the company’s corporate responsibility for the local industry as an indigenous business of Hualien. Looking forward to the technology getting mature, CHP hopes to make the Demonstration Base in the Hualien Mill a central area, which can be scaled up into a hydrogen-power industrial community. The expansion can subsequently enable some commercial operational modes to be developed in the local area and furthermore, motivate the hydrogen economy to thrive. Under this plan, Hualien will be growing into a model city that can lead Taiwan, and even the whole world, in the development and application of the hydrogen energy. Apart from the aforementioned, CHP will continue to make effort to enhance the hydrogen purification and recycling technologies. In support of government policies, CHP hopes to make itself a contributory part in carbon reduction, energy saving, and industrial development.
Founded in 2006 by the Non-Governmental Organization of Enterprise Asia, the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards comprise six categories: Green Leadership Award, Human Investment Award, Health and Wellness Promotion Award, Social Welfare Development Award, Small and Medium Enterprise Social Responsibility Award, and Responsible Business Leadership Award. The Award aims to encourage Asian companies to devote themselves to the fulfillment of corporate social responsibilities. This year, there are 28 countries competing for the awards, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates of the Middle East, and Turkey. This just shows that corporate social responsibility is gradually turning to be a critical issue among international society.
